Wall Seepage

Definition:
Water seepage is when water escapes through the wall surface.

Causes:
• Broken pipes inside walls.
• Cracks on the surface of the wall.
• Water leaks.

Solutions:
• Find the source of the leak and cover up the source, such as replacing a broken or leaking pipe.
• Fix cracks by widening it until it’s slightly wider using a chisel or grinder, then clean off any left over materials with a wet cloth.

• Apply Mowilex Alcaplast Repair AP 800 on the cracked area until the crackline is smooth, then after the Alcaplast layer has dried (after 7 days), apply a layer of  Mowilex Undercoat Tembok before applying the paint topcoat.
• If the water seepage is not caused by a leaking water source, then apply Mowilex Alcaproof on the surface affected by seepage, and let dry completely.
• Apply mat on corners.
• Apply plaster and Mowilex Alcaplast Skim Coat Grey AP 100 or ceramic tiles to prevent further seepage.

Hairline Crack on Skim Coat

Definition:
Hairline cracks are fine cracks on the surface of a skim coat, usually in the shape of a spider’s web or eggshell cracks.
Causes:
• Skim coat material dried too quickly.
• Changes in temperature and surface.
• Application of skim coat during hot or windy conditions causes skim coat to dry too quickly.
• Poor adhesiveness of skim coat.
• Plaster layer contains high amounts of sand and mud which causes shrinkage.
Solutions:
• Use Mowilex Alcaplast Skim Coat Grey AP 100 .

• Avoid applying skim coat under direct sunlight; use a roof protector to protect areas that will be prepared.
• Add Mowilex Alcabond bonding agent to increase adhesiveness.
• Apply Alcaplast Skim Coat on the surface of the hairline crack with a width of 1 to 2 mm.
• After drying, sand until surface is smooth, then clean off leftover dust with a wet cloth.
• After the coat of Alcaplast AP 100 Skim Coat Grey has dried (after 7 days), apply a layer of Mowilex Undercoat Tembok before applying the topcoat.

Orange Peel Effect

Definition:
Orange Peel is when the texture of a painted surface is rough and wavy, similar to the texture of an orange. This is caused by roughness in particles that were not well atomized and paint that haven’t dried evenly.

Causes:
• Thinner used dries too quickly.
• When applying with a spray gun, causes may include spraying too close to the intended surface or the spray gun was not correctly set up causing paint particles sprayed from spray gun to not atomize perfectly.
• The spray viscosity is too thick especially on paint applications using a paint roller.

Solutions:
• Sand the surface affected by the orange peel effect and clean any dust leftover from sanding.
• Reapply paint coating after sanding.
• Use a thinner appropriate for the temperature of the environment; spray from a distance of 15 – 20 cm from the surface; viscosity according to recommendation from manufacturer; and spray gun air pressure and set up as recommended by manufacturer.

Water Streak Mark

Definition:
Water streak markes are blotches that appear to be shinier than the rest of the painted surface on a layer of emulsion (water-based) paint. Usually these occur after the painted surface is hit by light rain.

Causes:
• Application of paint during the wet season making it harder to completely dry, because the newly painted surface is hit by rain.
• Exposure to fog, dew, or other sources of dampness on a newly painted surface.

Solutions:
• Make sure that the painted surface is completely dry before it is exposed to water.
• Avoid any painting when rain is imminent, in the late afternoon, or during cold and wet weather conditions.
• If blotches appear a few days after painting, these can be removed by hosing them off.

Peeling Paint Coating

Definition:
Peeling paint coating is defined as the loss of adhesion when the topcoat is applied to multiple older paint layers.

Causes:
Use of emulsion paint on top of older layers of emulsion paint can cause a paint coating to peel from the surface of a skim coat because of loss of adhesion.

Solutions:
• Scrape all paint layers until the base of the wall using a putty knife.
• If needed, use a liquid paint remover. When using liquid paint remover, make sure to use long- sleeved clothing and protective gloves to protect arms and hands.
• Apply Mowilex Undercoat Tembok on the surface of the skim coat and let it dry completely.
• Use Mowilex Interior atau Exterior paints for best final results.

Wrinkling Paint

Definition:
Wrinkling paint is defined as a rough, wrinkling appearance on painted surface which occurs when the final layer dries faster than the previous layer.

Causes:
• Application of paint during very hot weather conditions, which can cause upper paint layers to dry quicker than previous layers.
• Application of paint during very humid conditions.
• Applying a coat of paint which is too thick.
• Applying the final layer of paint before the base paint has completely dried.
• Applying a harder final paint on a softer paint coating without using a base paint, or paint application on a shiny surface without prior sanding.

Solutions:
• First, remove the wrinkling part of the surface. If the layer below is soft, then scrape and, if needed, use liquid paint remover.
• Sand the surface until it is smooth and clean off any dust left from sanding.
• Avoid applying paint in humid conditions and during extreme temperatures (below 10°C and above 32°C).

• Areas that are directly connected with wood should be coated with a good quality primer and then left to dry completely.
• Use a Mowilex Interior or Exterior final paint, to avoid any wrinkles scrub every layer evenly and let each layer dry completely before applying the next layer.

Sagging Paint

Definition:
Sagging paint is when after a paint coating has been applied, there is a top to bottom flow or even dripping of paint which is caused by uneven paint application.

Causes:
• Over application of paint on each layer of coating.
• Paint application in cold and/or humid conditions.
• Using a too much thinner (either water or solvent).
• Applying paint to slippery or shiny surfaces that don’t have the capacity to bind new paint coatings.
• Applying paint using a spray gun too close to the surface.

Solutions:
• If the paint is still wet, quickly fix this with a paint brush or paint roller to even out the paint coating.
• If the paint has dried, sand the dripping or flowing area and repaint.
• Dilute the paint as recommended by the manufacturer.
• Avoid applying paints in cool or humid conditions.
• Always sand shiny surfaces beforehand.

Poor Hide

Definition:
Poor hide is defined as low covering capacity of applied paint, so that a paint coating doesn’t cover the color of the base surface completely after application.

Causes:
• Over dilution of paints more than as recommended by the manufacturer.
• Using the wrong tools or using low quality tools.
• Using low quality paint brushes.
• Certain colors have poor covering capacity even though it has been diluted as recommended by the manufacturer, such as bright yellows and certain shades of red.

Solutions:
• Applying a layer of paint which has been diluted as recommended by the manufacturer.
• Use good quality tools and a good paint roller cover.

• For certain colors which have poor covering capacity, apply one coat of the same type of paint with a lighter shade than the chosen color. Then, apply the chosen color following directions from the manufacturer.

Uneven Paint Due to Poor Flow and Laveling

Definition:
An uneven paint coating can show leftover brush marks or roller marks.

Causes:
• Using low quality paint.
• Using wrong application tools or low quality application tools.
• Painting over a dry surface with a paint roller or brush.
• Painting on a water absorbent surface such as a gypsum board (drywall).
• Conditions on the surface are too hot – usually over 32°C – or in areas with dry air where paint can dry too quickly. This can cause the paint film to not spread evenly.
• Using paints with poor evenness.

Solutions:
• When using a paint roller, make sure the paint roller is appropriate for the type of paint used.
• Use a good quality paint brush. This is important as low quality paint brushes can leave brush marks or even create uneven painted surfaces.
• Avoid painting in conditions which may cause paint coatings to dry too quickly.
• Use specially formulated Mowilex paints which have good evenness after application.
• Apply Cendana Interior Primer Coat or Mowilex Undercoat Cat Tembok so that topcoat paints are not directly absorbed into the gypsum board (drywall) surface.

Dark Mildew Spot

Definition:
Mildew can cause dark spots to spread to certain areas on the paint coating. Moss can also grow in the same area and usually this occurs in the lower parts of a wall.

Causes:
• No base paint was used on the surface that was painted.
• There was already mildew on the surface before paint was applied.
• The immediate surrounding area has high levels of humidity.

Solutions:
• Find out the cause of mildew by giving a few drops of bleach on the surface. If the dark spots disappear in a few minutes, then the cause is fungi on the surface. If the dark spots are still on the surface, usually it is either dirt or dust.
• Find and repair any sources that may cause the wall to be damp, such as water leaks or leaking water pipes.
• Cover all plants and bushes with a cloth cover before cleaning the surface.

• Completely scrape and clean all layers of mildew and moss. Use a putty knife, a wire brush, a rough scrub, and sandpaper. Paints affected by mildew or moss should be scraped all the way until the skim coat layer because mildew roots and moss can penetrate through the skim coat.
• Clean the surface using an anti mildew solution or using a chlorine and water solution (with a 15 : 85 ratio).
• Make sure to use gloves, eye protection, and protective clothes for your protection.
• After applying anti mildew solution, let it for two hours.
• Completely rinse the surface with clean water and let the surface completely dry.
• Use Mowilex Undercoat Tembok base paint and Mowilex Water Proofing Sealer before applying a final coating with Mowilex Interior or Exterior paints.
