Jakarta, Indonesia, July 19th 2023 – Premium paint and coating manufacturer PT Mowilex Indonesia (Mowilex) has again made a positive breakthrough for a sustainable environment. In the middle of the year, Mowilex made a mark by joining as a member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) as a member on March 9, 2023. UNGC is a UN-led initiative to support companies that are committed to ethical and responsible business practices in the fields of human rights, labor, environment, and corruption eradication. “We are proud to be part of a global initiative, and continue to have a positive impact on the environment and society,” said CEO of Mowilex, Niko Safavi, in Jakarta, July 18, 2023.
The UNGC provides an opportunity for companies and organizations to voluntarily align their strategies and operations with 10 principles agreed internationally. The company uses these principles as guidelines for carrying out business practices that are not solely focused on profit, but also promote integrity, and are oriented towards people and the environment. Among them is the commitment to support human rights, eliminate discrimination in the work environment, eradicate corruption, and promote eco-friendly technology.
Applying the 10 UNGC principles in business practice is certainly not an easy thing to do. Therefore Mowilex’s achievement by becoming a member of the UNGC confirms the company’s commitment to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “We are very excited about this membership and hope that Mowilex can inspire more companies and other stakeholders to get involved in the global movement that supports sustainability and an inclusive economy,” said Niko.
Before officially joining as a member of the UNGC, Mowilex had implemented ethical business practices oriented towards anti-corruption, environmental, labor and human rights values. Since producing the first water-based paint in Indonesia in 1970, five decades later Mowilex became the first carbon neutral certified company in Indonesia. This initiative was carried out long before becoming a member of the UNGC.
Mowilex has won the CarbonNeutral® certification for the fourth time in a row from Climate Impact Partners. The certification is obtained after completing evaluations of Scopes 1, 2 and 3 according to the global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. Mowilex achieved the certification by recording significant carbon reductions and offsets over a 12-month period. Currently, Mowilex is in the process of completing an evaluation for its fifth year of certification.
The company also continues to develop innovations in environmentally responsible technologies. This is proven by being the first Indonesian company to produce Naturalle™ bio-based paint, replacing petroleum-based resins. VOC-free Naturalle™ permanently removes formaldehyde from building materials and other sources. The use of renewable elements such as plants can reduce the overall carbon footprint of products, while improving indoor air quality.
This eco-friendly technology from Mowilex is an innovation in the premium paint and coating industry. During this time, building materials, cleaning products, varnish and other products are known to release formaldehyde, a pollutant that can irritate the eyes and nose, trigger asthma attacks and increase the risk of cancer. While Naturalle™ absorbs formaldehyde and converts it to water vapor, permanently removing contaminants from indoor air.
Mowilex’s commitment to supporting environmental preservation in Indonesia is implemented through a program of planting 50,000 mangrove trees that absorb carbon and protect coastal ecosystems. A number of Mowilex products have also received Green Label certification from Indonesia and Singapore, and received ISO/PAS 45005:2020 certification as a guideline for occupational safety management that can not only be applied during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also afterward.
“These various innovations and good practices are proof of Mowilex’s passion for environmental leadership and the implementation of ethical business practices, in accordance with UNGC principles,” said Niko. Mowilex develops innovation in the environmental and technological fields, and promotes anti-corruption values by implementing a whistleblowing system. With this system, the company is willing to receive, review, and discuss allegations of fraudulent practices from employees or other parties.
Mowilex’s status as a member of the UNGC encourages the company to continue developing sustainable principles in business and the environment. According to Niko, Mowilex will regularly announce its progress, challenges and initiatives related to sustainability in the annual Communication of Progress (CoP) report. “By becoming a member of the UNGC, Mowilex wants to collaborate with other companies and organizations that have aligned goals, to share good practice strategies and work together to achieve the SDGs,” said Niko.
