JAKARTA, Indonesia, Aug. 22, 2024 — Rising stars from PT Mowilex Indonesia (Mowilex) placed among top teams in the 2024 United Nations SDG Innovation Accelerator for Young Professionals (SDGI) Indonesia. Mowilex, Indonesia’s leading producer of premium paints and coatings, sent two teams to this year’s SDGI program. Young leaders presented a project called “From Palette to Planet,” while another team shared a presentation titled “Cutting Carbon Emissions.”
The Mowilex “From Palette to Planet” team secured the fourth position out of the 16 participating SDGI teams this year. At a recent ceremony in Jakarta, representatives from the UN and the Indonesian government honored for their accomplishments.
“We are incredibly proud of the Mowilex teams who outlined smart, high-impact ideas for this year’s SDGI competition. Tackling global challenges takes a global effort, and these accomplished young leaders are creating a better world for future generations,” says Niko Safavi, CEO of PT Mowilex Indonesia.
“This experience has been incredibly rewarding for us. Competing at such a high level has shown us the importance of innovation and collaboration in addressing global sustainability challenges. We’re proud to have represented Mowilex and to contribute to meaningful solutions that align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. This recognition motivates us to continue pushing boundaries and creating lasting impact in our industry and beyond,” says Madya Prayogie, a member of the winning Mowilex team.
The nine-month SDGI program encourages young professionals to drive innovations that deliver on their companies’ sustainability goals. Open to participating companies of the UN Global Compact, the program strengthens young organisational talent, promotes private sector change, and fosters collaboration in support of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Mowilex SDGI entries highlighted the company’s easy-to-use carbon footprint calculator now available to the public. The tool builds awareness around emissions and empowers consumers to track and reduce their personal footprint. Team members discussed how Mowilex has been voluntarily including VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) disclosure labels on its products since 2019. Additionally, Mowilex minimises both potential waste and the carbon footprint of each container of paint with its new Mowilex Recycled paints. Introduced in 2024, Mowilex Recycled products contain up to 40% premium recycled paint in each 2.5-litre pail. By recapturing elements from unused, top-quality inventory bound for disposal rather than manufacturing with raw materials, the carbon footprint of Mowilex Recycled is cut by up to 60% compared to equal paint products.
These Mowilex initiatives support several specific UN SDGs. For example, each pail of Mowilex Recycled paint has a lower carbon footprint. This leads to improved health (SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being) and climate action (SDG 13: Climate Action). The company’s environmental awareness work fosters sustainability education (SDG 4: Quality Education) and community engagement (SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities). Innovative products and VOC data transparency support sustainable industry (SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and responsible consumption (SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production). Mowilex projects also create employment opportunities and economic growth (SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth), while strengthening global partnerships to achieve common goals (SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals).
Empowered by the 2024 award, Mowilex will continue to implement practices that advance the UN’s SDGs and align with the company’s mission. By expanding environmental, social and governance (ESG) efforts, Mowilex continues to position itself as an industry leader making a positive impact.
“Through these innovation projects, Mowilex invites other companies to think creatively about their own environmental commitments. As more of us collaborate and carry out big ideas, we’ll all make progress toward the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals,” says Niko Safavi, CEO of PT Mowilex Indonesia.
