Jakarta, May 4, 2023 – Paint manufacturer PT Mowilex Indonesia (Mowilex) strengthens its commitment in preserving the environment by making 37% of the area of its new factory in Cikande, Serang, Banten, a green area. This is a further step from Mowilex as the first water-based paint manufacturer in Indonesia, as well as the first carbon neutral certified company in this country.
The green area at the Cikande factory is planned to be planted with 10 types of Indonesian trees. The types of trees planted represent the islands of the archipelago. Namely the islands of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua, Bali and Nusa Tenggara.
The ten types of flora that will be planted are Cempaka (Magnolia champaca) from Aceh, Pulai (Alstonia scholaris) from South Sumatra, Mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni) from DKI, Cambodia (Plumeria obtusa) from Bali, Sungkai (Peronema canescens) from South Kalimantan, Ironwood (Eusideroxylon zwageri) from East Kalimantan, Sengon (Albizia chinensis) from West Sulawesi, Black Wood (Diospyros celebica) from South Sulawesi, Eucalyptus (Melaleuca cajuputi) from Maluku, and Rainbow tree (Eucalyptus deglupta) from Papua.
This green area will be integrated with the zero waste water treatment facility at the Cikande factory. All waste production water will be recycled to irrigate the factory’s green areas.
Mowilex hopes that this initiative at the Cikande factory will have a positive impact, both on workers and the environment. “The green area at the new Mowilex factory will create good air quality, reduce carbon emissions, and hopefully have a positive influence on our workers. Of course, we are proud to be able to continue making decisions that put the environment first,” said Niko Safavi, CEO of PT Mowilex Indonesia.
The Mowilex factory in Cikande is designed with green building technology and concepts that can reduce carbon emissions by up to 7 percent. This factory area is supported by a zero-waste water treatment system which can recycle waste production water. The distillation results can be reused to irrigate 37% of the factory’s green areas.
This year, Mowilex is also committed to completing the target of planting 50,000 mangroves which are known to play a natural role in preserving coastal areas. It is planned that as many as 25,000 mangrove seedlings will be planted in mangrove forest areas in Kalimantan.
Previously, Mowilex had started reforesting a number of areas since 2020, in collaboration with the Directorate General of Social Forestry and Environmental Partnerships, Ministry of Environment and Forestry. After Purwakarta (West Java), Bali and Langkat (North Sumatra), in 2022 it will be Belitung’s turn to plant 10,000 mangrove seedlings. The collaboration also includes the Hutan Kemasyarakatan Seberang Bersatu community which manages ecotourism in Belitung.
