- The event is part of a 50,000 tree planting program by Mowilex which has received great support from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia.
- The planting of mangrove tree seedlings is one of the ways to mitigate climate change and is part of the Mowilex Sustainability Initiative which also includes reducing carbon emissions and marine conservation.
Denpasar, February 21, 2020 – After their recent tree planting event at the Kampung Ilmu (Knowledge Village) in Purwakarta, West Java, PT Mowilex Indonesia (Mowilex) once again held a tree planting event, this time to answer the needs of the Prapat Agung Mengening Patasari Fishermen’s Association by planting mangrove seedlings in the Tukad Mati Drainage Basin in Bali which has been damaged and is barren. The planting of these seedlings are also part of a series of events running up to Mowilex’s 50th anniversary on March 22, 2020.
The company’s 50th anniversary has a deeper meaning for Mowilex as, over the years, it has become an important part of Indonesian society. Mowilex is a pioneer in developing environmentally friendly practices since it began operating in 1970 by becoming the first Indonesian manufacturer to produce water based paints and is also the first Indonesian paint manufacturer to obtain a CarbonNeutral® certificate. Building on this legacy, Mowilex is committed to continue to contribute for Indonesia and its environment through a number of sustainability initiatives.
“When we had discussions with our employees how Mowilex wanted to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the results were amazing, and we agreed to continue our sustainability program which we hope will be beneficial for communities here in Indonesia and especially for the environment,” says Mowilex CEO, Niko Safavi. “We never would’ve guessed that what we wanted to do was in line with the needs of the Prapat Agung Mengening Patasari Fishermen’s Association to re-green the now barren Tukad Mati Drainage Basin,” Niko continued.
Representing the Prapat Agung Mengening Patasari Fishermen’s Association, I Nyoman Sukra says, “I am very grateful that Mowilex has donated 5,000 mangrove tree seedlings and are also concerned about the current conditions in the Tukad Mati Drainage Basin which is now barren,” says Nyoman.
Also known as Jero Mangku Dolphin, Nyoman also dreams of the day when the 5,000 mangrove trees have fully grown, he wants to work with the fishermen of Patasari to develop ecotourism in the area and create the future mangrove forest as an area for mangrove related research. “It will be a point of pride for us when we’ll have visitors in future. I can then tell everyone that this was supported by a company as big as Mowilex, which has been around for 50 years,” Nyoman concluded.
Tukad Mati is a watershed which functions as a drainage basin for urban areas around Bali. If this drainage basin is unbalanced, then it can affect the surrounding areas which can cause floods in several regions of the island, such as Kuta and Seminyak which have been hit by such floods before.
Hasnawir, PhD as representative for the Director of Partnerships at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry is very supportive of the project and appreciates Mowilex for helping by planting 5,000 mangrove tree seedlings.
“Indonesia is blessed to have the largest mangrove ecosystem in the world and also to have the most types of mangroves living here. Because of this, initiatives such as the one done by Mowilex in collaboration with the Prapat Agung Mengening Patasari Fishermen’s Association are a good example to followed. This spirit of cooperation and togetherness needs to be spread to other organizations as well,” he concluded.
Not only is the Ministry of Environment and Forestry present at the event, but also a number of regional officials, religious leaders, as well as university students from Japan. The mangrove tree seedlings which were planted today were Rhizophora Mucronata, a type of mangrove which is able to grow faster than other types.
“For Mowilex, trees have a sacred meaning, as trees can be said to be center of life and at this moment Mowilex is preparing a way for people to participate online to become ‘foster parents’ to the trees that we’re planting,” says Mowilex Chief Marketing Officer, Anna Yesito Wibowo. As part of the company’s 50th anniversary celebrations, Mowilex is committed to plant 50,000 seedlings of various types of trees as needed across all the regions in Indonesia.
